Rozalie Hirs
Rozalie Hirs is a Dutch poet and composer, known for her innovative approach to language and sound.
Hirs studied composition at prestigious institutions, including the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and Columbia University. In 1992, she published her poetry for the first time in literary magazine De Revisor. Since then, her work has appeared in various Dutch, Belgian, and German literary magazines, such as De Gids, Tirade, Poëziekrant and Akzente. She has published nine collections in Dutch, six of which have also been translated into other languages. Her collection ecologica (Vleugels, 2023) was awarded the Jan Campert Prize.
Hirs’ poetry is characterized by fluid sonic structures and an open syntax that allows for multiple layers of meaning. In ecologica, Hirs explores the vulnerability of nature and the climate crisis, portraying endangered species and ecosystems not with cynicism but with wonder and a deep love of language. She views language as an ecological system—one that demands care and attentiveness. Hirs frequently creates interdisciplinary work for apps or museum installations by collaborating with visual artist and designers. Her multidisciplinary approach and her ability to weave together poetry and science make her a unique voice in contemporary literature.
