ONE OF US VIII

As we walk along the road
knapsacks on our umbrellas
laughing and chattering blind
to everything around us
we are sometimes accosted
by people by the roadside
who are infirm ill or old
and who want to join us
but though one of us observes
that those by the roadside
have the same destination
we shake them off
they really slow you down.

(‘those by the roadside’)

Iemand van ons VIII

Iemand van ons VIII

Als wij op de steenweg lopen
met onze knapzak aan de paraplu
lachend en babbelend geen oog
voor alles wat ons omringt
worden wij soms aangeklampt
door mensen in de berm
die ziek zijn oud of gebrekkig
en die met ons mee willen
maar al merkt iemand van ons op
dat zij daar in de berm
dezelfde bestemming hebben
wij schudden ze van ons af
ja zeg dat schiet niet op.

(’zij daar in de berm’)
