Translation slam ft. Hilde Keteleer & Peter Huijzer
Translating poetry is a challenge. Even in the target language, rhyme, rhythm, double meanings and subtextual references must hold up. Which translator succeeds best, finds the word with the right sound, meaning and dynamics? In this translation slam, translators Hilde Keteleer and Peter Huijzer take on each other in a translation battle at the cutting edge. Both translators translate the same poem and do their utmost to convince each other and you that the choices they made are the only correct ones.
Hilde Keteleer is an author, literary translator from German and French and a writing teacher. She translates both poetry and prose for various Dutch and Flemish publishers and for many magazines. Her most recent translations: Beeldenraper, from the work of former Belgian poet laureate Carl Norac, and Requiems by R.M. Rilke. A new collection of poetry will be published in October.

Driven by big questions, Peter Huijzer began studying philosophy in Amsterdam in 2009. He studied classical and contemporary thinkers, and soon the need arose to be able to read all those great texts in their original language as well. Huijzer began training as a literary translator of German at the Amsterdam School of Translation in 2019. As a translator, it is always a great enrichment for him to get to the bottom of a text down to the smallest details.
