Elly de Waard

The sounds of the beach, of

The sounds of the beach, of
people, muted by a cadence –
poems could be read there
even resonate and a drifting

of words was all that we heard,
a rolling of phrases and lines
easy as the waves, quiet as the
settled sand –

the moment is just as fleeting as
its recollection is intense
and as experiences they are
perhaps of a kind –

De geluiden van het strand, van

De geluiden van het strand, van
mensen, gedempt door ruisen –
gedichten konden er gelezen
en zelfs klinken en een verstuiven

van woorden was al wat wij hoorden,
een deinen van zinnen en regels,
lui als de golven, stil als het
verstoven zand –

het moment is even vluchtig als
de herinnering eraan intens
en als belevenis zijn zij
wellicht om het even –
