Poem

Elly de Waard

In an age in which poets

In an age in which poets
have been reduced to novelties, to
marginality, an age, too,
in which languages (like my own)
either merge or vanish

to want to be a poet anyway
in such a historically rich, but tiny
and stubborn language that
has a way of saying things all its own
and in making reference is authentic.

En in een tijd, waarin een dichter

En in een tijd, waarin een dichter
geworden is tot curiosum, tot
marginaliteit, een tijd ook
waarin talen (als de zijne)
zich vermengen of verdwijnen

toch dichter te willen zijn
van zo’n historisch rijk, maar klein
en koppig taalgebied, dat van
een eigenzinnigheid van zeggen is
en in benoemen authentiek.
