Tom Lanoye
AN INVERTED BABYLON
Not that the tower’s suddenly upside down
Balancing perilously on too-slender foot
Broadening as it moves heavenwards
Parking ramps now enviably aloft
Foundation jutting up like a spiky crown
Concrete pillars-of-society groping at thin air
Penthouse tragically underground
Belvedere on beds of fossils and earth
No no not that
but those who work and live there
Swap their gibberish for the unison
Of global simultaneous translation
Thanks to earbuds apps and algorithms
At once all chattering intelligibly
Even dialects braille pantomime
No more barriers left to talking
And yet I’ll bet they’ll still find reasons
Maybe even more for carnage vendettas war
But then also
an end to cross-fertilization
My heroes interpreter translator put out with the trash
And everyone wedged in their own babblebubble
Under the spell of imagined harmony
Never again another symphony of sounds
Never again the seduction of grammar
From eras here and regions there
Never again another framework
To test the shape of thoughts
Just this one ubiquitous language
That suddenly everyone seems to speak
Will this inversion ever come unbent
How do I stay non-artificially intelligent
EEN OMGEKEERD BABYLON
EEN OMGEKEERD BABYLON
Niet dat die toren op zijn kop staat plots
Vervaarlijk balancerend op te smalle voet
Steeds meer verbredend naar de hemel toe
Parkeergarages thans begerenswaardig hoog
Fundering daar nog boven als een stekelkroon
Betonnen heimatpalen graaiend naar houvast
Het penthouse tragisch ondergronds
Een belvédère op aardelagen en fossielen
Niet dat dus
wel dat wie er werkt en woont
Zijn spraakverwarring ruilt voor ’t unisono
Van wereldwijde simultaanvertaling
Met dank aan oortjes apps en algoritmes
Direct verstaanbaar kletsend allemaal
Zelfs dialecten braille doventaal
Niet één barrière meer om niet te praten
En wedden dat nog steeds misschien nog meer
Men reden vindt voor oorlog vetes massamoord
Maar ook dus
dat de kruisbestuiving stopt
Mijn helden tolk vertaler bij het huisvuil
En ieder in zijn eigen babbelbubbel
In de ban van valse zuiverheid versmalt
Nooit meer een ander klankorkest
Nooit meer verlokking door grammatica
Van eeuwen her contreien ver
