Poem

Hans Faverey

If nothing at all actually exists,

If nothing at all actually exists,
I would also much sooner
have stayed away myself. With these

and suchlike words

the tamarisk burnt out, sanctifying
the ground. Once his breath was back
the stranger fell still. Even he knew
little more than he keeps to himself
of what was told him. The sun
was the hardest to bear, he spoke

bitterly.

Als er inderdaad echt niets bestaat,

Als er inderdaad echt niets bestaat,
was ik veel liever eerder zelf
weggebleven. Met deze

en dergelijke woorden

doofde de tamarisk, de grond
heiligend. Eenmaal op adem gekomen
zweeg de vreemdeling stil. Ook hij
wist weinig meer dan hij verzwijgt
van wat hem is verteld. Het meest
had ik last van de zon, sprak hij

verbitterd.
