Masterclass Tom Lanoye – ReinAard reimagined
Tom Lanoye (BEL), one of the most compelling voices in Dutch-language literature, returns to a childhood passion with ReinAard. In this masterful retelling of the medieval epic Van den vos Reynaerde, he breathes new life into the cunning fox who mercilessly punishes his fellow animals for daring to think they’re smarter than he is.
In this exclusive masterclass, Lanoye unveils the secrets behind his choice for four-footed verse and how he translates timeless themes such as power, status, money, and violence into a contemporary context. He shows how ReinAard is not merely a retelling, but a mirror held up to our times, where the seduction of power and the stench of hypocrisy remain ever-present.
Prepare for a captivating session in which Lanoye shares his unique perspective on language, rhythm, and the enduring relevance of medieval tales. A must for lovers of literature, poetry, and the art of storytelling.

Tom Lanoye
Tom Lanoye (born in 1958 in Sint-Niklaas) grew up in a butcher’s family, where his mother—a celebrated amateur actress—and his father ran a successful butcher shop. His upbringing, marked by a love of theatre and an eye for business, has had a profound influence on his writing. Lanoye’s autobiographical works, such as Een slagerszoon met een brilletje (A Butcher’s Son with Glasses, 1985), reflect on his youth, the death of his brother, and his difficult coming-out.
In the 1980s, Lanoye studied at Ghent University, where he became involved in performance poetry. He self-published his first literary works and made his official debut in 1983 with Rozegeur en maneschijn, a collection of literary criticism. Lanoye quickly established himself as a versatile writer working across genres—prose, poetry, and theatre. In his early career, he was an outspoken voice in social and political debates, particularly around LGBTQ+ rights and nationalism.
Lanoye’s work often tackles urgent political themes. Notable titles include The Third Marriage (2006), Happy Slaves (2013), and Purification (2017). As a dynamic performer and writer, he has also created radical adaptations of classical texts such as Hamlet and King Lear. With numerous prestigious awards to his name, Lanoye has become one of the most influential figures in Flemish and Dutch literature.
