Biography
Galo Ghigliotto is a Chilean poet, novelist, and editor born in Valdivia, who titled his recent book with the name of his home town. “How does... Ghigliotto’s birthplace and a city due south of Santiago--coincide with Valdivia, the realm of crossed memories, ghosts, mythical spirits, remnants of physical and psychic violence?” asks Alexis Almeida in his Asymptote review of the English edition (tr. Daniel Borzutzky). According to Almeida, "Valdivia [speaks] to this duality: the inescapability of the present, and the histories written into the present, set against language’s capacity to rewrite and rearrange those histories. [Ghigliotto's] book suggests that this is one of poetry’s great means of resistance”.
Ghigliotto has received endowments from the Chilean government for the collection of poems Herodes and the novels Maleza and Matar al Mandinga, which was awarded first prize for an unpublished novel in the 2016 Gabriela Mistral Literary Games. In 2016 he received an MA in Latin American and Chilean Literature from the Universidad de Santiago de Chile. He currently directs the publishing house Editorial Cuneta and organizes La Furia del Libro, an annual independent publishers fair. His poetry has been included in anthologies in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, and the United States.
