VALENÇAY

Paying for identity. Paying for tradition. 
The French State pays when it subsidises 
an agricultural activity whose workforce
in days no longer measured from sunrise
to sunset over farmland first ploughed 
at least some seven millennia in the past
quickly declines alongside the percentage
of its real contribution to GDP. It pays
for time. An ancestral time that only exists
financed by millions and more millions. 
It doesn’t pay for alpine goats’ milk. Doesn’t
pay for the dusting of charcoal that covers
the rind. It doesn’t pay for the room, damp
and ventilated, where it’s left to mature. 
It pays to keep up an idea, the landscape
suited to that idea. Pays for national pride
or pays for a phrase from Brillat-Savarin. 
(It’s best accompanied with a nice Shiraz.) 

VALENÇAY

Identiteit kost geld. Traditie kost geld.
Dat betaalt de Franse staat via de subsidie
van een landbouwactiviteit waarvan het aantal 
mandagen, niet langer bepaald door het op- 
en ondergaan van de zon boven de minstens 
zeven millennia geleden ontgonnen velden, 
even vlug terugloopt als het percentage
van zijn reële aandeel in het BBP. Hij betaalt 
voor een tijd. Een tijd van weleer die op de been
wordt gehouden door miljoenen en miljoenen.
Hij betaalt niet voor de melk van een Alpine geit. 
Niet voor de houtskoolas waarmee de wrongel 
wordt afgedekt. Niet voor de vochtige en 
geventileerde ruimte waarin hij rijpen zal. 
Hij betaalt voor het voortbestaan van een idee, voor 
het daarbij passende landschap. Voor de nationale trots 
betaalt hij, hij betaalt voor een zin van Brillat-Savarin.

Eso paga el Estado francés cuando subsidia
una actividad agrícola cuya mano de obra
en jornadas ya no más medidas por el alba
y el ocaso sobre unos terrenos roturados
desde al menos unos siete milenios atrás
rauda se reduce al igual que el porciento
de su participación real en el PBI. Un tiempo
paga. Un tiempo ancestral que solo existe
financiado por millones y más millones. 
No paga la leche de una cabra alpina. No
paga las cenizas de carbón con que cubrir
la cuajada. No paga la habitación húmeda
y ventilada donde se lo dejará madurar.
Paga la persistencia de una idea, el paisaje
adecuado a esa idea. El orgullo nacional
paga, paga una frase de Brillat-Savarin.
