THE AESTHETICS OF THE BANK OF CHINA TOWER, SHANGHAI

From Lokatse it emits property’s endless gabble,
full of its own eloquence, it holds forth about the cross-strait financial scene
You have your renovated Bund as well
but this isn’t nightfall, supplying strolling tourists
 
The Whampoa River’s turnover supplies
the remainder of the lower reaches, is the sunset’s molten gold
Ferryboats scatter spindrift like productivity
the flight of sparrows, tortuous as trade
 
There’s no need to compete on altitude, for none near or far stop at
eighteen storeys, exquisite escarpments that they are
Nor even any need to climb, for it’s enough to look down from the apex
on the holiday crowd of living creatures spreading like a stain
 
In that under-exposed field of view, the spring outlook is not good
or has merely provided a hasty outline
or is birds and beasts all butchered
in mid-air in a very structured way
 
Green luxury
The park is in good order and on guard, like it’s members-only
with a little bit of that sexy indoor feeling
and the rock garden’s lifelike Sixth Zen Patriarch
 
But it’s offensive, like the way a waiter in a cigar bar
empties ashtrays. You withdraw your gaze
as if acknowledging an error; you were quarrelling with
a lurker, but you’ll split the autumn colours between you

Vanaf Lujiazui verrijst vol welsprekendheid het vastgoed
met zijn woordenvloed, het financiële landschap van beide oevers toelichtend
Jij hebt je eigen vernieuwde Bund
maar het is nog geen avond, die slenterende toeristen levert
 
De rivier is een handelsstroom,
aan zijn benedenloop smelt het goud ook weg als de zon ondergaat
De veerboot werpt productiviteitachtig schuim op
Mussen in de lucht, drijvend als handel
 
Niet nodig om te strijden om de hoogte, het houdt niet op bij
achttien verdiepingen, adembenemende steile wanden
Zelfs zonder omhoog te klimmen kun je vanaf de top
uitkijken over alle vakantievierende wezens als vlekken
 
Een zicht dat te donker is, een lente die te wensen overlaat
of misschien alleen een haastig verschafte schets
of misschien gevogelte, dat systematisch
in de lucht wordt afgeslacht
 
Groene weelde
Het park is netjes en afgeschermd, een ‘alleen leden’-systeem
ook met wat erotisch binnengevoel
ook met een levensechte zenmeester in de rotstuin
 
Maar wat een belediging, die toren met zijn sigarettenbarbediende
die zo elegant mogelijk een asbak omwisselt. Je herroept de gezichtslijn
zoals je een fout erkent; met een onzichtbaar persoon
discussieer je lange tijd, maar het gaat gelijk op.

从陆家嘴,冒出一腔雄辩
滔滔不绝的地产,阐述着两岸的金融风光
你也有自己翻新的外滩
但不是傍晚,供游人踱步
 
浦江周转着
剩余的下游,也是落日融金
渡轮卷起生产力般的浪花
麻雀之飞,宛如贸易
 
用不着攀比高度,远近都不止
十八层,精致的悬崖
甚至也无须攀登,你即可在一个顶端
俯瞰假日里污点般的众生
 
在曝光不足的视野,春天形势不妙
或者只是匆忙提供了一份提纲
或者是禽只,有组织地
已被宰杀在半空中
 
绿豪华
公园整饬而戒备,像会员制
还有略显色情的室内感
还有假山逼真的神秀
 
但它是冒犯的,以雪茄吧侍者
换烟缸式的风度。你收回视线
像承认错误;你跟某个隐身人
