Rati Amaghlobeli

I loved you with the same feeling

I loved you with the same feeling
I had for the universe, for childhood,
A feeling which quivered in me for years,
And then vanished together with you.

Every possible peace I experience,
So that I haven’t lost my footing.
I loved you with the same torment,
As the rising sun felt loving mother earth.

But what shall I do? You have shut
Every door to stop me getting in, and
Doubt niggled at you like a thousand husbands
In the unmade untidy bed of your dreams.

But one day God will enter the house
In the blue Crucifixion shirts of the evenings,
You’ll have no-one by your side, and
Against your will you’ll fall in love with me.

Astounded, I shall spread my arms out wide,
And when you greet me somewhere,
I shall yell, as white boats yell,
When at sea they come to be anchored by the shore.

Alle vrede ging aan me voorbij,
