I LOVE THAT FIRST BUILDER

I love that first builder
who left a hole in the wall
– a small round hole,
or a square one –
for ventilation
or to look at the world from the inside.
When you’re sheltered by walls
you can let your eyes roam beyond them
like a dog relieving itself.
I thought about leaving a window
in my body as well
so I could twist my neck
and look inwards, gaze
at my own heart
and ask myself:
Why is this man I love
crying like that, so much now
that he’s soaking my soul?

IK HOUD VAN DEZE EERSTE BOUWER

Ik houd van deze eerste bouwer
die een gat in de muur open liet
klein en rond
of vierkant
voor ventilatie
of een opening naar de wereld
Als je achter een muur schuilt
dan kunnen je ogen buiten dwalen
als een hond 
die zijn behoefte doet
Ook in mijn lichaam dacht ik
aan een venster
om mijn nek te draaien
en diep
in mijn hart te kijken
en mij af te vragen
waarom de man van wie ik hield
zo huilt
dat mijn geest kletsnat wordt

أحب هذا البنّاء الأول..
الذي ترك فتحة في الجدار
فتحة صغيرة دائرية
أو مربعة..
للتهوية..
أو للفرجة على العالم من الداخل
حين تكون محتميا بالجدار
تستطيع أن تترك عينيك بالخارج
تتجولا مثل كلب..
يقضي حاجته
وفي جسدي أيضا فكرت
أن أترك نافذة هناك 
كي ألوي رقبتي
وأنظر الى الداخل
أحدق في قلبي
وأتساءل 
لماذا يبكي هذا الرجل الذي أحببته 
هكذا..
حتى أنه يبلل الآن روحي .
