EIGHTH ELEGY

ACHTSTE ELEGIE

In een digitale droom
of op het witte doek
zei Onzichtbare Zuster:

Elke keer als sperma van mijn borsten stroomt
ben ik gedwongen te vragen
wat voor fontein dit is?

Kind van het imperium
kind van Sarin
kind van de atoomsplitsing

dat ik ben
gespleten in tweeën als ik ben
in een chemische droom

of op het witte doek
telkens als zwarte inkt
uit me sijpelt

ben ik gedwongen te vragen
wie vermaakt is
door wat ze gehoord

en wat ze gezien hebben?
Kind van fosfor
als neerslag op de daken,

oud kind van het archief
zijn gefilterd licht, zijn
stof waarin verlangen

oprispt en slaapt
en waar de paarden – los caballos –
van mijn versplinterde nachten,

los caballos en el aire –
welke nood aan aarde –
traag door het stof stijgen,

traag stijgen, tijd
hebben ze niet nodig,
ze hebben de waanzin

van paarden in hun ogen,
ze stijgen traag, ze
cirkelen rond, ze keren

en keren terug, ze vermaken
alsof de muziek van hen was.
Er komt geen einde aan.

Ze hebben de waanzin
van paarden in hun ogen,
de waanzin van het archief

waar ik verblijf.

EIGHTH ELEGY

In a digital dream
or on the silver screen
Invisible Sister said:

Whenever sperm pours from my breasts
I am forced to ask,
What sort of fountain is this?

Child of empire,
child of Sarin,
child of the atom split

that I am
split in half that I am
in a chemical dream

or on the silver screen
whenever black ink
seeps from me

I am forced to ask,
Who has been entertained
by what they have heard

and what they have seen?
Child of phosphorous
raining upon rooftops,

ancient child of the archive,
its filtered light, its
dust in which desire

surges and sleeps
and where the horses – los caballos –
of my splintered nights,

los caballos en el aire –
what need of earth –
lift slowly through the dust,

slowly rise, they
have no need of time,
they have the madness

of horses in their eyes,
they slowly rise, they
encircle, they turn

and return, they entertain
as if the music were their own.
There is no end to it.

They have the madness
of horses in their eyes,
the madness of the archive

where I reside.
