AT A REFUGEE CAMP

IN EEN VLUCHTELINGENKAMP

Na opstootjes kachasu*
slapen we dronken
om in het heetst van de strijd te ontwaken
met katers
die hun toevlucht zoeken
in ons hoofd.

We vinden geen vrede
in dit dorp
door geesten behoed
die niet van onze voorouders komen
maar uit de fles.

Vliegen vallen aan
in ijselijke zwermen
met projectielen gewapend
we liggen en sterven
op onze krukjes
in toiletten vol diarree.

Onze samengepakte troep
doet irritaties oplaaien
ontsteekt ons ongeduld
om te ontvluchten naar elders.

AT A REFUGEE CAMP

After bouts of kachasu
we sleep drunk
to wake up in running battles
with hangovers
that seek refuge
in our heads.

We find no peace
in this village
protected by spirits
not of our ancestors
but from the bottle.

Flies invade
in ghostly numbers
armed with missiles
we lie and die
on our stools
in toilets full of diarrhoea.

Our crowded numbers
flare tempers
fire impatience
to seek refuge elsewhere.
