SONG FOR GEOFFREY FIRMIN IN THE DAY
OF THE DEAD THERE IN QUAUHNÁHUAC

PART I
(In tune)

Geoffrey Firmin had a wound
Deeper than the Iztaccíhuatl
And the Popocatépetl
And to it the consul applied scotch
Habaneros mezcal and anise
Tequila beer or his aftershave.
So he fed his wound
And stoked the fire
That led him burning
Onto the parched streets
Of Quahnáhuac.

Geoffrey Firmin had a wound
Deeper than any volcano.

Geoffrey Firmin was a Penelope
Who waited weaving ethylic
Scarfs of sanctity
He unravelled every dawn
With cigarettes and more alcohol…

Geoffrey Menelaus Firmin
Swallowed all the seas
From the “PUERTO DEL SOL”:
Mouth of fire
All the way to the avernus “FAROLITO” anchor
Urgently searching for Helen
For the consul knew too well
That it is impossible to live
If one does not love.

Oh Yvonne Yvonne Yvonne

PART II
(Out of tune)

Geoffrey Drunk Firmin
Discovered all the beauty in the world
In an old woman of Tarasco
Playing domino with her cock
At seven in the morning in a cantina:
“How do you expect to understand
Unless you drink like me…?”

Evohé Evohé Evohé

Geoffrey Condemned Firmin
Walked down the way of the cross from seven to seven
Without Veronicas or Cyrenians
Only with his cold eyes
With his cold eyes
His cold eyes

Kyrie eleison Kyrie eleison Kyrie eleison

Geoffrey Shot Firmin
Was thrown down a ravine
And after him a dead dog

Oh Geoff Geoff Geoff

Geoffrey Dying Firmin
Convulsed in his breast
As if spurred
By the horsemen of death
And with an open eye
As if he were
“Completely drunk”
More than reading
He seemed
To want to write on the sky:

                                                 DO YOU LIKE THIS GARDEN
                                                           WHICH IS YOURS?
KEEP YOUR CHILDREN FROM DESTROYING IT!

CANCIÓN PARA GEOFFREY FIRMIN EN EL DÍA
DE LOS MUERTOS ALLÁ EN QUAUHNÁHUAC

CANCIÓN PARA GEOFFREY FIRMIN EN EL DÍA
DE LOS MUERTOS ALLÁ EN QUAUHNÁHUAC

PARTE I
(Entonada)

Geoffrey Firmin tenía una herida
Más profunda que el Iztaccíhuatl
Y el Popocatépetl
Y a ella el cónsul aplicaba scotch
Habanero mezcal y anís
Tequila cerveza o su after shave.
Así nutría la herida
Y alimentaba el fuego
Que lo llevaba ardiendo
Por las sedientas calles
De Quauhnáhuac.

Geoffrey Firmin tenía una herida
Más profunda que cualquier volcán.

Geoffrey Firmin era un Penélope
Y esperaba tejiendo etílicas
Bufandas de santidad
Que destejía en cada aurora
Con cigarrillo y más alcohol...

Geoffrey Menelao Firmin
Tragóse todos los mares
Desde el ’PUERTO DEL SOL’:
Boca de fuego
Hasta el averno ‘FAROLITO’ ancla
Buscando con urgencia a Helena
Pues sabía muy bien el cónsul
Que vivir es imposible
Si no se ama.

Oh Yvonne Yvonne Yvonne.

PARTE II
(Desentonada)

Geoffrey Borracho Firmin
Descubrió toda la belleza del mundo
En una anciana de Tarasco
Jugando dominó con su gallo
A las siete de la mañana en una cantina:
“¿cómo esperas comprender,
a menos de que bebas como yo...?”

Evohé Evohé Evohé

Geoffrey Condenado Firmin
Recorrió el vía-cruz de siete a siete
Sin Verónicas ni Cirineos
Sólo con sus ojos fríos
Con sus ojos fríos
Sus ojos fríos

Kyrie Eleison Kyrie Eleison Kyrie Eleison

Geoffrey Abaleado Firmin
Fue arrojado por un barranco
Y detrás suyo un perro muerto

Oh Geoff Geoff Geoff

Geoffrey agonizante Firmin
Convulsionado el pecho
Como si lo espolearan
Los jinetes de la muerte
Y con un ojo abierto
Como si estuviera
“Perfectamente ebrio”
Más que leer
Parecía
Querer escribir en el cielo:

                                          ¿LE GUSTA ESTE JARDÍN?
                                                   ¿QUE ES SUYO?
¡EVITE QUE SUS HIJOS LO DESTRUYAN!
