Jimu Langge

I Think of a Mistake

In the past, when going to my family’s home came up
I would feel an indescribable excitement
My family is from Leipo
My father said: this is your eldest uncle
she’s your cousin
You should call him uncle
Other than this
I’m fairly unfamiliar with the place

At the my family’s home
I got to know a young woman
No one explained how we were related
I hoped that she was my younger cousin
As the sun went down behind the mountains
She again confirmed for me that
Yi women are the most beautiful
Beneath the haystack, she told me that
Once she made a mistake
Her face went red at first
and then a bit pale
Maybe because night was falling
or maybe because of me, this supposed older cousin
from far away
she never did tell me
what that mistake was
