The Argana international poetry Award was created in 2002 by the house of poetry in morocco as a sign of poetic friendship from Moroccan poets to one of their fellow poets around the world. The winner of this year's award, which amounts to £8000, is the Chinese poet Bei Dao.
The Argane is a unique tree which grows only in Morocco, specifically in the region south of Morocco set between The Great Atlas range and the Massa basin. From afar it looks like an olive tree, but as you come closer it reveals a whole mysterious world dependent on its own.

This uniqueness in shape and fruit is what prompted us to name the award of the house of poetry in Morocco after it. The award is granted during the international festival of poetry in Casablaca to a poet whose originality is recognized internationally. It is in fact a Moroccan sign of love and respect towards poets who do their best to preserve the uniqueness of language. It is also a prize of poetic friendship from Moroccan poets to one of their fellow poets who realized a great poetic and humane experience; a poet who defends the values of difference, freedom, and peace. Through it we salute all poets and share with them our love and deep concern for poetry.
