Kwame Dawes
Kwame Dawes is Jamaica’s poet laureate (2025-2028). He is a playwright, actor, producer, musician, reporter, and author. Born in Ghana, he grew up in Jamaica, deeply influenced by reggae music.
His poetry collections include Sturge Town (2023), Nebraska (2019), and Duppy Conqueror (2013). He has also published two novels, Bivouac (2009) and She’s Gone (2007), which won the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award.
Dawes won an Emmy for LiveHopeLove.com and contributed to Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting on post-earthquake Haiti. He is a professor at Brown University, Artistic Director of Calabash Literary Festival, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. In 2022, Jamaica awarded him the Order of Distinction (Commander Class). In 2024, he received the Furious Flower Lifetime Achievement Award.
