Michael Palmer

In zijn poëzie problematiseert Palmer begrippen en taalgewoontes en toont hij politiek engagement. Dit omdat hij, naar hij zelf zegt, in een tijd leeft waarbij ‘zelfs de dood en het “ik” in handelsartikelen zijn getransformeerd’. Palmer meent dat zijn werk ‘zich enigszins verwijdert van de radicale syntaxis om zich toe te bewegen naar de mysteries van de gewone taal, en dan niet zozeer opgevat in alledaagse als wel in filosofische zin’. Critici hebben in zijn werk invloeden van Louis Zukofsky, Paul Celan en Samuel Beckett getraceerd, alsmede sporen van het surrealisme en van filosofische en linguïstische theorieën. Robert Hass noteerde eens: ‘Zijn poëzie is een even duistere als humoristische verkenning van de representatiemogelijkheden van de taal, maar ze verrast je voortdurend met haar vernuft en haar pure schoonheid. Brighde Mullins verklaarde dat ‘Palmer met zijn nadruk op de klank een subtekstuele vreugde oproept’ in een tijd ‘dat het oog domineert over het oor’.

Michael Palmer won talloze prijzen; waaronder de Wallace Stevens Award van de Academy of American Poets en de Shelley Memorial Prize van de Poetry Society of America.
