Biography

"i write to return

to the country i should never have left"

- from: intentions

Gustavo Gac-Artigas is a Chilean writer, poet, novelist, playwright, and screenwriter, living in the U.S. since 1992. Previously, he was a political refugee in France, having been expelled from Chile after his imprisonment during the military coup of 1973. After an unsuccessful attempt to return to Chile under Pinochet’s regime and a year spent in Latin America searching for a place to live and create, he was sent into a second exile, this time in Rotterdam.

He is a corresponding member of the Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española (ANLE), a member of PEN Chile, the Academia Universalis Poetarum, and the Academia Tomitana of Constanza.

He regularly contributes opinion articles to Le Monde Diplomatique (Chilean edition), Impacto Latino (NY), El Desconcierto (Chile), TodoLiteratura (Spain), and Letralia. His poetry has been published in numerous magazines and anthologies across the United States, France, and Latin America and has been partially translated into English, French, and Romanian.

As a poet, he has participated in international festivals and poetry readings in Paris, the United States, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, India, and Costa Rica, among other countries.
