Gustavo Gac-Artigas

the unrecognized man

the man with black,
ink-stained hands
with a long fingernail to recognize the notch
that allows the letter to stand up
and embrace the blank page

the man who sacrificed his lungs
so that the word might breathe between your hands

the man whose long fingers
carefully traversed the pages
to give meaning to the phrases
and prevent the rebellious ones from escaping meaning

the man who wore out his eyes
counting letters and words
pursuing the slippery comma
the powerful period
to conclude a thought

the man who replaced the noises of life
with the sound of pages
running, just to be possessed
and give birth to a book

the man who, unrecognized,
in a secret act of love
placed his fingerprint on the last page of the book

that man should be called a poet
not me

y no yo
