Linton Kwesi Johnson of LKJ is een Jamaicaanse dichter en activist die al decennialang in het Verenigd Koninkrijk woont.
Al vroeg in zijn carrière wist hij poëzie en activisme met elkaar te verbinden, toen hij zich in 1970 aansloot bij de Black Panther-beweging aansloot en voor leden poëzie-workshops organiseerde. In een interview uit 2018 beschrijft Johnson zijn motivatie om te beginnen met het schrijven van poëzie als een manier om zijn woede over racisme en onderdrukking en zijn passie voor de vrijheidsbeweging tot uitdrukking te brengen: “Poetry was a cultural weapon in the black liberation struggle”.
Zijn eerste werk verscheen in het tijdschrift Race Today, dat ook zijn eerste dichtbundel Voices of the Living and the Dead (1974) publiceerde. LKJ’s vijfde bundel Mi Revalueshanary Fren: Selected Poems (2002) maakte hem tot één van de drie levende dichters van wie het werk door Penguin Modern Classics is uitgegeven. Naast het Engels zijn zijn gedichten ook doorspekt met Patois.
Als een van de pioniers van de dub poetry mengt Johnson poëzie en dub-muziek (een subgenre van reggae) en creëert op deze manier krachtige en ritmische performances. Hij heeft zijn muzikale performances vereeuwigd op zestien albums, waarvan vele door zijn eigen label LKJ records zijn uitgebracht. In de bundel en plaat Dread Beat an’ Blood (1975/1978) beschrijft hij het brute politiegeweld tegen zwarte jongeren in het Londen van de jaren 70. Zijn gedichten gaan verder dan de beschrijving van de gebeurtenissen; in zijn werk is zijn oproep tot opstand en sociale verandering voelbaar.
De Jamaicaanse overheid erkende LKJ’s buitengewone verdiensten in de wereld van poëzie en muziek en bekroonde hem tot lid van de Order of Distinction. Ook werden hem ontelbare eretitels door universiteiten en instituten in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Jamaica en Zuid-Afrika toegekend. Van de Engelse tak van PEN ontving hij de Golden PEN voor zijn gehele oeuvre.
