Roelof ten Napel

psalm (he says: take the second young bull)

the weeping willow is gone,
and along the tiled path the sleepers too.
this year for the first time I didn’t see
the magnolia flowering, its falling,
spreading through the garden.

god lays the dew on my skin
but not on the grass, or on the grass
but not on my skin.

that is how he speaks, he
uses it. if a void appears between me
and the world, he fills it up–
a man without teeth, who looks at me,
his hands open in front of him, up and down
as though weighing something,
his mouth full
of an autumnal red, bleeding tongue.

een man zonder tanden, die me aankijkt,
