Dylan Thomas 50th anniversary festival
A two-week long festival to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Dylan Thomas has started in Wales this Monday. The festival will run from the 27th, Thomas' birthday, until 9 November, the anniversary of the poet's death in 1953, the BBC announces. Shortlist TS Eliot Prize
American poet laureate Billy Collins heads the shortlist for the annual TS Eliot Prize, the BBC reports. Also on the list are Jamie McKendrick, Lavinia Greenlaw and Don Paterson, among others. The award will be presented by the Poetry Book Society - founded by Eliot in 1953 - on January 19.

Larkin voted UK’s favourite poet
According to a survey held by the Poetry Book Society, Philip Larkin is Britain’s best-loved poet of the last fifty years. The survey, held to mark the joint 50th Anniversary of the Poetry Book Society and the Poetry Library, canvassed thousands of people, writes the BBC. The full list of the nation’s favourite poets and a second list of Britain’s favourite poems, also topped by Larkin, is published in The Guardian.

Ciaran Carson wins Forward
Belfast poet Ciaran Carson has been awarded the Forward Prize for poetry for his collection Breaking News, the BBC reports. The collection, his ninth, includes despatches from a war correspondent. The Forward Prize, worth 10,000 British pounds, is the UK's biggest annual poetry award.

Nobel winner translates Dutch poetry
A translation by J.M. Coetzee, this year’s winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, of six of the most important modern Dutch poets will appear in February 2004. The bilingual edition, titled Landscape with Rowers: Poetry from the Netherlands, features poetry from Cees Nooteboom, Gerrit Achterberg, Hugo Claus, Sybren Polet, Hans Faverey and Rutger Kopland. An extract from Coetzee’s preface to the collection is published in The Guardian.
