Motion criticizes curriculum
British poet laureate Andrew Motion, the poet laureate, said he was “bitterly disappointed” that poetry and creative writing were largely absent in the secondary schools curriculum in England. He voiced his criticism of “Government’s failure to make time in the curriculum for creativity” in an interview in the Independent.

Kat François wins World Slampionship
British slammer Kat François is the winner of the 2nd Poetry World Slampionship, organised by the Poetry International Festival in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Brandon McLeod (Canada) ended second, whereas the third place was taken by Henry Bowers (Sweden). The other participants were Sonya Renee (United States), Sven Ariaans (The Netherlands), Tobias Borke (Germany), Ewok (South Afrika) and Mitchell Joe (Australia).

New Sappho poem discovered
A newly found poem by Sappho, acknowledged as one of the greatest poets of Greek classical antiquity and seen by some as the finest of any era, is published for the first time today in the Times Literary Supplement, the Guardian writes. The poem, written more than 2,600 years ago, consists of 101 words of verse, and deals “with a theme timeless in both art and soap operas; the stirrings of an ageing body towards the nimbleness, youth and love it once knew.” Only three other complete poems by Sappho are hitherto known. The poem was found in the cartonnage of an Egyptian mummy.

Eugénio de Andrade, 1923-2005
{id="4647" title="Eugénio de Andrade"}, one of Portugal’s greatest and most beloved poets, died after a prolonged illness at his home in Oporto, on June 13th. He was 82 years old. His poetry, remarkable for its luminous, earthly sensuality, has been translated into over 20 languages. Richard Eberhart, 1904-2005
Pulitzer Prize-winning American poet Richard Eberhart has died at his home in New Hampshire at the age of 101, the BBC reports. Former colleague and fellow academic Jay Parini said Eberhart’s work makes up “part of the permanent treasury of American poetry”.

Award for Kathleen Jamie
Scottish poet Kathleen Jamie has won the official Scottish Book of the Year Award for her collection The Tree House, writes the Glasgow Herald. Jamie was previously awarded the Forward Poetry Prize in 2004 for the same collection.

Griffin Prize for Simic and Borson
Roo Borson’s Short Journey Upriver Toward Oishida and Charles Simic’s Selected Poems 1963-2003 are the Canadian and International winners of the fifth annual Griffin Poetry Prize, the Griffin Trust announced. The C$100,000 Griffin Poetry Prize, the richest poetry prize in the world for a single volume of poetry, is divided between the two winners.
