Nooteboom wins P.C. Hooft Prize
Dutch writer and poet Cees Nooteboom has been awarded the P.C. Hooft Prize for his entire oeuvre. Nooteboom is chiefly known for his travel stories, for which he has received many international awards. He is one of the Dutch poets translated into English by J.M. Coetzee in his recent collection Landscape with Rowers.
Rojas wins Cervantes Prize
Chilean poet Gonzalo Rojas has won the Cervantes Prize, AP reports. The prize, named after the author of Don Quixote, is the Spanish-speaking world's top literary award, worth 110,000 dollars. Rojas, 85, published his first poetry collection in 1948.

Spam poetry
Bloggers are making poetry out of random texts hidden in spam messages, the BBC reports. Spam headers often contain fragments from literary works or strings of strange words, in order to fool spam filters and make it appear as if a human has written them. The BBC quotes one of the readymades, and links to several websites of new spam poets.
Saudi poet killed in ambush
Saudi poet Talal al-Rasheed has been shot dead by attackers while on a hunting trip in Algeria, AP reports. Al-Rasheed and his party were ambushed late Thursday near Djelfa, 175 miles south of Algiers. Though unconfirmed by the authorities, Algerian newspapers blame the attack on the Salafist Group for Call and Combat (GSPC).
South African poet freed
Mzwakhe Mbuli, one of South Africa's most popular artists, has been released from jail. Mbuli, who performed a traditional praise poem at the presidential inauguration of Nelson Mandela a decade ago, was sentenced to 13 years in jail for a 1997 bank robbery but claims a bag was planted in his car, the BBC writes.
