The "Open Mike" Competition, established in 1992, has become the largest and most successful – and perhaps even the most important – competition for young writers in the German-speaking world. A number of authors, who are today regarded as some of the outstanding voices of contemporary German literature, appeared for the first time in public at the "Open Mike," having been noticed and honored by the knowledgeable editors and jurors of the competition.

The "Open Mike" Competition of the literaturWERKstatt berlin, which has from its inception been co-sponsored by the Foundation Preussische Seehandlung, offers young authors a stage to present their talents, and has become for many a point of entry into the literary business. From the hundreds of texts sent to the competition, editors from renowned publishing houses choose twenty-four candidates for a two-day final competition. The jury, made up of well-known authors, then chooses three prizewinners from the finalists. The winners receive a total of 4500 € prize money and participate in a radio broadcast. Every year, the competition is attended by numerous representatives of publishing houses and literary journals, literary agents and scouts as well as journalists from all of the important mass media. Many of the manuscripts have in this way found their way directly to publishers. The current announcement and schedule for the competition can be found in the Internet at:
