Samira Negrouche maakt deel uit van een nieuwe generatie Franstalige Algerijnse dichters: een 'soort' waarvan gedacht werd dat ze zou verdwijnen met de postrevolutionaire invoering van het Arabisch als eerste taal op scholen en universiteiten. Toch blijven de Franstalige Algerijnse dichters en andere schrijvers - die "in het Frans schrijven om de Fransen te vertellen dat ze geen Fransen zijn", zoals Kateb Yacine het scherpzinnig uitdrukt - schrijven, en schrijven in, door en tegen een traditie die helemaal van hen is. Maar in plaats van zich uitsluitend tot de Fransen te richten, heeft hun werk een leven in heel Noord-Afrika en Afrika ten zuiden van de Sahara, in de hele Franstalige wereld en, in vertaling, in Zuid- en Noord-Amerika en heel Europa.
Samira Negrouche werd in 1980 geboren in Algiers, waar ze nog steeds woont. Ze is dichteres, redactrice en vertaalster - van het Arabisch naar het Frans - die is opgeleid als arts, maar die sinds enkele jaren haar schrijf- en literaire projecten verkiest boven de medische praktijk. Ze heeft vaak samengewerkt met beeldend kunstenaars en muzikanten. Haar boeken zijn onder andere: A l'ombre de Grenade (2003), Le Jazz des oliviers (2010) en Six arbres de fortune autour de ma baignoire (2017) en Quai 2/1 : Partition à trois axes (2019) dat groeide uit een performance met een violist en een theorbist. Er is een grote verscheidenheid in Samira's werk, van lyrisch tot verhalend, wrange analyses van menselijke interactie naast schilderkunstig, en ekfrastisch, met de verleiding van abstractie.
Six Arbres de fortune autour de ma baignoire' (Zes geïmproviseerde bomen rond mijn badkuip) is het titelgedicht van een bundel die bestaat uit zeven sequenties, vaak gedichten die reflecteren op of zijdelings verwijzen naar sculpturale en picturale installaties, of muzikale composities, evenals het landschap dat haar verbeelding voortdurend vernieuwt. De reeks is hier afhankelijk van beelden, plaatst ze naast elkaar en ontloopt ze: cartoons, orthodoxe iconen, rotsschilderingen in het Hoggar-gebergte in Algerije, astronomie, een hedendaags stadslandschap - en is een voorbeeld van de verbale legerdemacht waarmee ze haar wereld observeert en aan ons presenteert.
Samira Negrouche was born in 1980 in Algiers where she still lives. She is a poet, editor and translator – from Arabic to French – who trained as a doctor, but who has chosen her writing and literary projects over the practice of medicine for several years. She has frequently collaborated with visual artists and musicians. Her books include: A l’ombre de Grenade (2003), Le Jazz des oliviers (2010) and Six arbres de fortune autour de ma baignoire (2017) and Quai 2/1 : Partition à trois axes (2019) that grew from a performance with a violinist and a theorbist. There is great variety in Samira’s work, from the lyrical to the narrative, wry analyses of human interaction juxtaposed with the painterly, and ekphrastic, with the temptation of abstraction.
'Six Arbres de fortune autour de ma baignoire' (Six makeshift trees around my bathtub) is the title poem of a book consisting of seven sequences, often poems that reflect or obliquely reference sculptural and pictorial installations, or musical compositions, as well as the landscape that continually renews her imagination. The sequence here depends on images, juxtaposes and eludes them: cartoons, Orthodox icons, rock paintings in the Hoggar mountains of Algeria, astronomy, a contemporary cityscape – and exemplifies the verbal legerdemain with which she observes and presents her world to us.
