THE LITTLE STREET

Later
there would be rain
rain!
cried the parrot in the morning
from the window opposite
one of those days
the sky half cloudy
the cobbles’ clean curves
a mute script
briefly the children think up a game
and rain! cries the parrot
in the afternoon now it’s dry
the white at windows and gate
almost glows
also the womens’ bonnets
two white
words for later.

DE KLEINE STRAAT

Later
zou het gaan regenen
regen!
riep ’s ochtends de papegaai
vanuit het tegenover gelegen raam
zo’n dag
de hemel half bewolkt
het gipswerk schoon gebogen
gereed om op te schrijven maar stom
in korte tijd bedenken kinderen een spel
en regen! roept de papegaai
in de namiddag is het nog droog
bijna opgewekt het wit
straalt op de ramen en de poort
zelfs de kappen van de vrouwen
twee witte
woorden voor later.

DIE KLEINE STRASSE

Später
würde es regen geben
regen!
rief morgens der papagei
von gegenüber im fenster
so ein tag
der himmel halbwolkig
das pflaster sauber gewölbt
wie zur schrift aber stumm
kurz denken sich die kinder ein spiel aus
und regen! ruft der papagei
am nachmittag noch ist es trocken
fast heiter das weiß
leuchtet an fenstern und tot
auch die hauben der frauen
zwei weiße
worte für später.
