THE LITTLE GIRL FROM GAZA

The little girl from Gaza builds
a nest of sea feathers
the eyes of the man who stands by the wall
hide a necklace strung of memory leaves
and a street runs beneath
errant stairs in the nest
an egg cracks open with legends boys
scamper in the dusk colors
they pick at the muffled voice
from the desert sands with evening
the necklace scatters the beads from the eyes
that moisten the seapath
night dispatches the smile
into exile the poet’s soul is spent
