Alfred Schaffer

an empty train

an empty train.
on its way to the shunting yard.

a burned-out train
on a siding.

intimidating state property by night.
or take humankind.
exterminated by a superhuman form of intelligence.

and brought back to life again.
by a loner
who won’t stand for any funny business.

to force yourself to do something, not to
do something or to tolerate it.

how I long for that something.

like a dog that tirelessly
walks on the leash.

no, you can’t sing that.

neither can I
with my black voice.

een lege trein

een lege trein.
op weg naar het rangeerterrein.

een uitgebrande trein
op een zijspoor.

intimiderend staatseigendom bij nacht.

of neem de mensheid.
uitgeroeid door een bovenmenselijke intelligentie.

en weer in het leven geroepen.
door een eenling
die geen fratsen accepteert.

te dwingen iets te doen, iets niet
te doen of te duiden.

wat verlang ik naar dat iets.

als een hondje dat onvermoeid
in het gareel blijft lopen.

nee, dat kun je niet zingen.

ook ik niet
met mijn zwarte stem.
