Learn to translate poetry with a professional translator

Translation Workshops: There is a translation for that!

Have you always wanted to learn the craft of translating poetry? Or you already have translated some poems in the past, but you want to elevate your skillset with the help of a professional translator? Look no further, Poetry International organizes translation workshops. During our festival week, translation workshops take place in different language variations. You, as an aspiring translator, are going to work on a translation of a poem from one of the festival poets. During that process, you will be guided and coached by a professional translator that translated this poem for the festival. Experience in translating is not needed; curiosity, love for languages, and some guts are recommended.

You can sign up for the workshop by buying a ticket for the workshop online. Once you purchased the ticket, you will receive the poem for the workshop (no later than 2 weeks before the workshop).

Translation workshop contemporary Persian poetry by Sholeh Rezazadeh (Persian - Dutch)

On Saturday 10 June, we organize a translation workshop on contemporary Persian poetry. In this workshop, you will translate a poem by a contemporary Iranian poet into Dutch, under the supervision of translator Sholeh Rezazadeh. Prior to the workshop, you will be sent an Persian poem to translate. You take that translation with you to the workshop and discuss it with the other participants and with the workshop teacher, Sholeh Rezazadeh. Later in the evening, you can see Sholeh Rezazadeh perform at the festival in the program Sci-fi Poetry: writing other realms.

Translation workshop Annelie David and Farhad Showghi  (German – Dutch)

Prior to the workshop you will receive a poem by Farhad Showghi to translate. During the workshop, you are going to discuss and compare your version of translations with other participants and the original translator of the poem, Annelie David. The last half hour of the workshop the poet will make appearance to answer any unanswered questions. Later that day, you will be able to see Farhad Showghi perform his poems during the festival!

Translation workshop David Colmer and Ester Naomi Perquin  (Dutch – English) SOLD OUT

Prior to the workshop you will receive a poem by Ester Naomi Perquin to translate. During the workshop, you are going to discuss and compare your version of translations with other participants and the original translator of the poem, David Colmer. The last half hour of the workshop the poet will make appearance to answer any unanswered questions. Later that day, you will be able to see Ester Naomi Perquin perform her poems during the festival!
